Coal Creek Black Oak # 153345
Caduceus Quentin X Coal Creek Licorice
Black, foaled May, 2000

Coal Creek Black Oak contains in his pedigree some of the best known names in the Morgan world, not just the horses, but the people who bred them. He himself was bred by Gary L. Wallace of Pleasantville, Iowa- a long time breeder and a well respected one. Black Oak's sire- Caduceus Quentin was bred by Dr. Lowell Hughes of North Liberty, Iowa , while Quentin's dam was bred by Mabel Owen of Dartmouth, MA- Miss Owen's name and influence on the Morgan breed is more than well known. Quentin's sire was bred by The Cambridge Morgan Ranch of Colorado- long known for producing very solid, correct, good working horses.

Black Oak's dam, Coal Creek Licorice was also bred by Gary Wallace, her sire Caduceus Casanova was bred by Dr. Hughes. Licorice's dam Honey Spice was bred by Gary Wallace. The farther back one goes the more well known names come up, The Waseeka Farm, The University of Connecticut, The LU Sheep Company, and back farther yet, JC Brunk breeder of Jubilee King, The US Government Morgan Farm, The Remount Program, CC Stillman, breeder of Sealect, CA Stone, breeder of Cornwallis, Pine Ridge Indian Agency, Elmer Brown of Halstead, KS. The list goes on. Black Oak's pedigree is highest in the blood of Allen Franklin, sire of Penrod who was the sire of Jubilee King., who was a Sherman Morgan descendant. But he also represents in good measure the blood of The US Government farm's breeding through Mansfield, Topaz, and Linsley . The US Government stallions were also tail male Sherman bred. The Ancient Vermont blood of Artemsia, Sealect, Carolyn and Cornwallis- all representatives of Woodbury are present. Dude Hudson and Sparhawk and Romanesque are there representing The Remount Program. Romanesque brings into the mix the famous breeding program of Richard Sellman of Texas. Bulrush Morgan is present through Flyhawk. Red Correll and Winterset, backbone of the Triple S Morgans are on the pedigree as well as the very well known Waseeka's Nocturne. Upwey Ben Don is represented by his son Windcrest Don Again, sire of UC Dark Shadow, owned and used by Mabel Owen in addition to her famous stallion Merry Knox.

Looking at Caduceus Quentin a bit more deeply, he was by Cambridge Eddy Black out of Merry Miranda by Merry Minstrel by Merry Knox. Merry Miranda was out of Sister Donna by UC Dark Shadow. Merry Minstrel , sire of Merry Miranda was by Merry Knox out of Junestar. Merry Knox was by Government bred Meade while Junestar was by Squire Burger by Juzan by Jubilee King and out of Mansphyllis by Mansfield out of Paragraph by Jubilee King. Merry Knox was out of April Showers by Squire Burger out of Easter Maid by Jubilee King. Kings-Haven Senator was the sire of Eddy Black, and he was by the very prolific Senator Graham out of Choquita. Senator Graham goes back to Knox Morgan and is a combination of Sherman and Woodbury breeding. Choquita who was the dam of Kings-Haven Senator ; was by Pride of King out of Cinnamon Queen. Pride of King was Government through Shenandoah on his top line and Jubilee King though his dam Rarette by Jubilee King. Cinnamon Queen was by Cinnamon Lad out of Illawana Bess. Cinnamon Lad goes back to Romanesque by Red Oak by General Gates, and out of Allana by Allen King, by Allen Franklin. More intense Sherman breeding, with the addition of Charles Reade who brings in Black Hawk, while Daniel Lambert, Ben Franklin, Chetco bring in more Sherman blood. Illawana Bess brought in more Jubilee King through Ken Carmen his son, and she brought in Go Hawk, sire of Flyhawk, through her dam Gosette out of Daisette by Senator Knox out of Daisy De Jarnette.

Cambridge Dolly T was the dam of Cambridge Eddy Black she was by Waseeka's Regal Airs , a son of Waseekas Nocturne out of Cambridge Suzy T. Suzy T was by Broadwall Brigadier a son of Parade who carried the blood of Cornwallis, and Sealect as well as that of Raymond S. Sentney- by Chocolate by Linsley out of Lady Spar by Sparhawk. This is very solid working blood and very well respected for years.

Coal Creek Licorice, dam of Coal Creek Black Oak, by Caduceus Casanova out of Honey Spice brings in ten crosses to Jubilee King, and is also carrying in high number of crosses- the blood of Allen Franklin, and more of General Gates. So she can be considered a strongly bred Sherman mare. In addition Coal Creek Licorice brings in the very desirable blood of Winterset via Red Correll, and more of the Sellman breeding program – which is the backbone of what we call The Working Western Family. Honey Spice, her dam is the source of the Winterset blood, being by Kahlua out of Nancy Pine Swanton. Kahlua was by Sabre by Colonel's Boy by Cornwallis. Kahlua's dam was Judy Brown by Homestake by Red Vermont by Jubilee King. Judy Brown's dam was Juminas Swanee P who carried Chocolate, Linsley, Sparhawk, Dart, Dude Hudson, and Headlight Morgan on her sire line, on her dam's side of the pedigree we go back again to Jubilee King/ Daniel Lambert/Sherman blood through Allen Franklin, Jasper Franklin, Jubilee De Jarnette, Charles Reade and Ben Franklin. Also present is Knox Morgan and the cross of Knox Morgan on Daniel Lambert's family has always been a wonderful one. Honey Spice's dam Nancy Pine Swanton was by King Pine by Chief Wabaunsee by Agazizz by Juzan by Jubilee King, while her dam -Sandy Swanton- was by Red Correll going back to Winterset- a most valued stallion for producing true Morgan type and soundness. Sandy Swanton's dam was by Souix Gold who also goes back to Red Correll. In addition Linsley is present, as are Romanesque, Headlight Morgan, Red Oak and Ken Carmen. It is through Licorice's sire line that Cinnamon Lad comes in again to the pedigree of Coal Creek Black Oak, as does Pride of King, Powerful, Chocolate and Go Hawk again through Flyhawk this time. All of horses may be considered among the greats of the Morgan breed, some where shown and won extensively, most made their names and reputations not only in the breeding shed, but as long lasting, sound, sane, solid working horses with good sane minds and correct conformation.

With a background such as this, Black Oak should go far and do well in the future, in what-ever areas he enters.
